Why Continuity of Midwifery Care Matters

During my pregnancies, I was lucky to have the same midwife (or a small team I knew) throughout the whole journey. From my first appointment to the birth of my baby and even afterwards, I had someone I trusted by my side. That made a huge difference.

Now, a new study has proven what many of us have always felt: having the same midwife can lead to better health outcomes for both mums and babies.

What the New Study Found

In 2025, a study published in Communications Medicine looked at how midwife continuity of care affects pregnancy outcomes in England.

Here’s what they found:

  • When women had the same midwife or small team throughout their pregnancy, stillbirths were less likely to happen.
  • Those babies were more likely to successfully breastfeed right after birth.
  • Women also felt more supported and confident in their care.

Why Is Continuity of Care Important?

Pregnancy can be exciting, but also scary and unpredictable. Having a midwife who knows you, your medical history, your worries, and your birth preferences can make a big difference.

Continuity means:

  • Your midwife can notice small changes quickly
  • You don’t have to repeat your story every time
  • You feel more relaxed and in control
  • You build real trust with your care provider

My Experience

Looking back, I feel truly thankful to have had the same midwife during my pregnancies. She knew me, she listened, and she gave me confidence. When things got stressful, I felt reassured because I wasn’t starting from scratch with a stranger.

It made my whole journey into motherhood feel safer and more personal.

Why We Need More of This

Sadly, many women don’t get this kind of care. Staff shortages and changing shifts mean many mums see different people at every visit. But the research shows this isn’t the best way.

We should be pushing for:

  • More support for midwife-led continuity of care
  • Better staffing and resources
  • A healthcare system that puts people, not just policies, first

In Conclusion

Having the same midwife matters. It saves lives, improves breastfeeding, and helps women feel cared for, not just treated.

If you’ve had this experience, you’ll know how special it is. And if not, this research shows why every woman deserves it.

Let’s raise our voices to make continuity of midwifery care a reality for all. If you require support, get in touch with me and lets walk this journey together.

Have you had the same midwife throughout your pregnancy? I’d love to hear your story.
